According to the Association for the Prevention of Pet Obesity, veterinarians have identified 59% of dogs as overweight or obese.  This figure has increased over the years but findings show that the percent of obese dogs increased by 3% between 2018 and 2022 while the percentage of overweight dogs remained steady during the same period.

The Association stated: “The increase in pet dogs (dogs owned as opposed to feral or free-roaming) classified as overweight or with obesity may be attributed to improved clinical assessments, results of pandemic-related inactivity or overfeeding, aging dog populations, variations in sample size and distribution, or other unknown influences.”  Additionally, veterinarians will classify dogs as overweight or obese more often than their pet parents will.  As such, the reason for this increase cannot be pined down exactly but this doesn’t lessen the importance of your dog having a healthy weight.

Being obese (and also overweight to an extent) can lead to any number of diseases such as diabetes and even cancer.  As such, it’s important that we take corrective action when our dog’s weight isn’t ideal.  This could range from something simple such as following feeding guidelines to assistance from your veterinarian.  At PURELUXE, we want to be part of the solution.  All of our formulas eliminate unnecessary fillers and sugars that can lead to weight gain.  Additionally, our Healthy Weight Dog and Cat formulas have reduced protein levels while keeping fresh meat as the 1st ingredient.  Our veterinary alternative Stellar Dog formula is leaner still which can contribute to weight loss.
